Accuracy vs Precision

Precision refers to consistency. It measures how repeatable results are when the same test or process is performed multiple times. Accuracy, on the other hand, refers to correctness. It shows how close a measurement is to the true or accepted value.

Many organizations mistakenly equate consistent results with accurate results. However, a system can produce highly repeatable outcomes and still be wrong due to calibration errors, bias, or flawed methods. This creates a high-risk situation where decisions are made with confidence based on incorrect data.

The most dangerous scenario is when a system is precise but inaccurate. Stable and consistent measurements can hide underlying errors, making them difficult to detect. In industries like healthcare and biomedical applications, this can directly impact patient safety, leading to incorrect diagnoses, improper dosages, and delayed corrective actions.
